There are some wonderful strategies available in a book that is designed to
help children with learning disabilities. The strategies provided are
concrete and realistic, and I would imagine, be helpful for any child
learning spelling. The book is Taming the Dragons: Real Help for Real
School Problems by Susan Setley and can be ordered from 1-800-782-2390.

with "there, their, they're"
-"there" can be replaced by "here"
-"their" can be remembered by "E" "I" own it to remember that it shows
possession and has "EI"
-"they're" is a contraction which only makes sense when you substitute "they
are"

I called the 800 number for the book suggested. I was told, by anwering
machine, that it is a private 800 number, and I was then asked for the access
code.Does anyone know it? Any other suggestions for mnemonic stategies?

You might want to try to get the FIRST strategy from Kansas State University.
That has lots of help for mnemonics.

As a KS State Grad (speech/language path.)who works with many LD children on
memory & study skills techniques, I am interested in the strategies you
referred to. Whom do I contact at K-State? Thanks, -Nancy '81 & '84, KSU.

Some of the kids I know like to make sentences-like if you want to know how
to spell ICE the sentence could be
I
Can
Eat.
It seems way too complicated to me, but it really works for some people.

As a special education teacher (elem/middle school) and Learning Strategies
trainer, I would HIGHLY recommend the Strategies Intervention Model and its
related curriculum from the University of Kansas. This approach entirely
changed my methods of instruction. Instead of just teaching my kids with
disABILITIES skills in isolation, I can teach those skills in the context of
also teaching them HOW to learn and how to GENERALIZE those skills!! The
strategies involved range from written lang., reading, math, and study
strategies to content enhancement routines. The Center for Research on
Learning at KU is nationally known as being a leader in the field of
education. You can review articles written by Drs. Deshler, Schumaker,
Alley, Mercher, and Lentz that will provide you with research supporting this
metacognitive approach. I have had kids improve 2+ years in one school year
and no longer qualify or need special ed services after receiving this
instruction. I also train teachers in this approach and can honestly say its
changed the lives of students, teachers and parents. Please, call KU at
(9l3)864-4780/864-06l7 for further information. E-mail me if I can be of
further assistance.
